About Our School
About Our School
Montgomery Creek Elementary School, part of the Mountain Union Elementary School District, serves students from Preschool through Grade 8 in the beautiful mountains of rural Northern California. As a basic-aid district, we represent a diverse community rooted in rich outdoor traditions. Our unique setting provides daily opportunities for students, staff, and families to learn, explore, and thrive in nature.
Learning Environment
Learning Environment
We offer a modern, well-equipped learning environment that integrates technology, hands-on exploration, and place-based education. Students have access to individual Chromebooks, internet hotspots for home use, interactive classroom displays, and a wide range of digital platforms for intervention, enrichment, and discovery. Classroom habitats featuring insects, amphibians, fish, and other small animals support hands-on instruction on lifecycles, ecosystems, and scientific inquiry.
Our partnership with Indigenous leaders from across the North State enriches student learning through exposure to traditional technologies, cultural practices, and their relevance in meeting the challenges of today.
Our Students
Our Students
Our student population averages 70 to 75 students and reflects the diversity of our broader community. Approximately 20% identify as Native American, 20% as Multi-Ethnic (non Hispanic), 6% Hispanic, 50% Caucasian and 5% unknown. About 84% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
Our students have demonstrated remarkable resilience, adaptability, and enthusiasm for learning — particularly in response to the instructional changes required during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teaching and learning
Teaching and learning
Our educators have excelled in adapting instruction to meet the evolving needs of our students and families. We continuously refine our teaching practices and assessment methods to ensure continuous improvement and high quality instruction. Instruction is standards-based, with grading and reporting aligned to mastery of California state standards.
A comprehensive Social Emotional Learning program implemented over the past three years supports the development of emotional intelligence, growth mindset, digital citizenship, self-regulation, restorative practices, and the “Masters of the Skills of Independence.” Our commitment to problem-based and experiential learning prepares students to be creative, collaborative thinkers who can also work independently.
Montgomery Creek Elementary School has implemented a comprehensive Social Emotional Learning framework that supports the whole child. Students learn and practice growth mindset, emotional intelligence, digital citizenship, self-regulation, restorative practices, GRIT goals, and the “Masters of the Skills of Independence.” These skills contribute to a safe, supportive, and inclusive school culture.
Our academic program is grounded in California state standards and emphasizes problem-based and experiential learning. Students engage in creative, collaborative, and independent thinking—skills that prepare them for future success in school and in life.
Our students enjoy a focus on standards based learning where assessments and report cards are based on attainment and mastery of state standards. Problem based and experiential learning is a core principal our teaching staff continues to pursue. Our staff is aligned in the goal of helping our students prepare for their future by learning to be creative and collaborative thinkers who can work independently when needed.

Major infrastructure improvements — including new solar facilities and a backup generator — are scheduled for completion this summer. These upgrades will reduce reliance on PG&E and mitigate the impact of PSPS events that have led to increased school closures.
